Happy Chinese New Year! Today begins the year of the ox in China. Last year, we were in China for Chinese New Year, February 7, watching fireworks in the cold in Guangzhou while Ari slept through it all in her snuggle pack.
This year, Chinese New Year celebration, called Spring Festival in China, begins on January 26. As China is 16 hours ahead of us, it is already 1/27 there. There, it is one year since the day we met our precious girl.
We're not having a big new year celebration as Ari is so young. (We had a schedule conflict and didn't go to Spokane China Families celebration either.) We made Chinese lanterns out of construction paper - well, I let the kids help a little on some of them. :) We have a new Chinese recipe to try tonight which is sure to be yummy, and all the kids have new chopsticks.
I took a Ni Hao, Kai Lan video about Chinese New Year to the daycare last week, so all of the kids have had a chance to watch it. Today, Ari will get to wear a traditional dress to school, and I have red envelopes with chocolate coins to give to all the kids at daycare. Even though it's a small, rural daycare, Ari is one of four girls adopted from China who go there (one of them infrequently, three regularly). I am so glad that in this tiny place, she has this little peer group as part of her daily life. They have celebrated Chinese New Year at day care for several years.
I'll put pictures on the main blog when I can.
In the meantime, great information about Chinese New Year here at Wikipedia.
